The number of roadworks carried out in Bristol over the past three years has been revealed in a new report.
The UK Roadwork Capitals, which is based on Freedom of Information (FOI) requests to local councils, compares data from some of the country’s largest towns and cities.
Any authorities which did not respond by April 8 were excluded, according to Little Loans which carried out the research.
The report also looked at London separately, comparing each borough.
Bristol was ranked third in the table, with 75,855 roadworks between 2017 and 2019 - behind Liverpool and Belfast.
Meanwhile, Bournemouth had the fewest roadworks, according to the report, with only 856.
A spokesperson for Bristol City Council said: “Major works to redesign areas such as Temple Gate and the City Centre are hallmarks of the growth of the city of Bristol.
“They act as precursors to the development of these areas to deliver housing and jobs for residents.
“The majority of roadworks are work being carried out by utility companies where we have minimal control and we recognise the frustration that roadworks can cause.
“Bristol has led work to co-ordinate efforts between utility companies, developers and others who undertake work on the roads to minimise disruption.”
Chip Radoslavov of Little Loans, said: "Though the large number of roadworks will undoubtedly cause disruption in the short-term, the work being done will significantly improve key routes into the city.
"There’s no denying that roadworks are an annoyance for drivers and motorists, with lane restrictions and road closures negatively affecting the length, speed and enjoyment of a journey.
"However, in the long term, most of these roadworks are carried out to reduce overall journey times, and make for safer, more efficient driving.”
The council pointed out local authorities are required to provide notice of works - but said not all authorities do. It said Bristol had given notice in 90 per cent of cases.
