A man threatened shop staff with a firearm in Weston-super-Mare before he fled empty handed.

The man walked into the convenience store in Locking at around 5pm on Wednesday (March 18) and demanded staff hand over money.

He produced what police believe was a firearm.

The man left the store empty handed and was last seen getting into the passenger side of a silver Nissan X trail outside the store.

The weapon was not used and no injuries were sustained.

Police have launched an investigation and are looking at CCTV footage captured at the scene.

DS James Sherwin said the incident was ‘frightening’ for staff and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

DS Sherwin said: “Incidents such as this are extremely rare but no doubt this was a frightening episode for staff involved.

“Thankfully nobody was hurt.

“Our investigation is underway and we are looking at CCTV pictures to try and establish what happened.

“However we are really keen to hear from anybody who witnessed what happened yesterday, those who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area at that time or drove through the village and have dash cam footage.”
