This is all that is left of what was once Weston-super-Mare’s main police station.

Work on demolishing the station to make way for a landmark flats development started at the end of last year and has taken several months to complete.

A specialist machine was drafted in to ‘nibble away’ at the building bit by bit. Now all that is left is a pile of rubble.

Debris from the site will be recycled and used in future commercial schemes.

The demolition process included removing asbestos, taking out fixtures and fittings and disconnecting utilities.

Contractors also took down the link to the old Magistrates' Court and put in ramps and new entrance points to retain access to the site.

The adjoining court which has been used for Heritage Action Zone history open days, was not part of the demolition and has been retained for future use.

North Somerset Council leader Councillor Don Davies said: “The completed demolition will enable the council to move forward with ideas to breathe new life into this area.

“We look forward to developing detailed plans and consulting local people on them in due course.

“We’re also pleased that the debris from the building has been crushed up and will be recycled in future commercial schemes.

“This approach not only recycles the materials but saves the council money.”

The demolition has been filmed from a time lapse camera to showcase the process of demolishing the six-story building.

Once completed, the flats development will form part of the regeneration of the town centre area which will be known as Walliscote Grove.

The authority also has plans to redevelop the former council chambers in the future.

The plans form part of proposals to enhance the entrance to the town centre around the railway station.

The scheme will see 400 new homes and potentially shops and offices built on the Sunnyside Road and Locking Road car parks in the seaside resort.

The station could soon be demolished

The scheme is being developed in partnership with Homes England which has already bought several key sites in the location.

Millions of pounds is also due to be spent on improving the road access into the town centre.

The aim of the regeneration plans is to make the seaside resort a more attractive place to live and work.
