Luton Town chief executive Gary Sweet has suggested the Championship intends to play out the rest of the season in the order that games were originally structured in the fixture list.

The last game in the Championship which took place was on Sunday, March 8, when Derby County beat Blackburn Rovers 3-0 at Pride Park, just over 24 hours after Bristol City had drawn 1-1 with Fulham.

Since then, there have been no matches due to the postponement of football in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

Charlton Athletic have dropped a hint that the Championship will recommence on June 20 with the Premier League's return confirmed for June 17.

And Hatters chief executive Sweet, who wants the rest of the season to be played out, has suggested the remaining matches are due to be played in the order that they were originally structured in the fixture list.

Unlike in the Premier League and other divisions of the EFL where some clubs have games in hand on one another, all teams in the Championship have nine games left to play.

At a press conference where Nathan Jones was officially unveiled to the media for the second time as Luton manager, Sweet said: "As was planned, the Championship is going to play the rest of the season in the order that it was structured in terms of fixtures.

"We as a club have to get going. We’ve got to hit the ground sprinting. If the season didn’t play out for some reason, for example, as of now, we would be relegated and relegation isn’t something that we want to face, I’ll be honest."
