Bristol Rovers have had a slow start to the season but things are now looking up for the Gas as they picked up their first win in League One with a 2-0 victory over Tranmere Rovers on Tuesday night.

The Pirates are unbeaten at the Memorial Stadium after three games and into the second round of the League Cup when they welcome Premier League Brighton & Hove Albion to the West Country.

Rovers currently sit 17th in the League One table.

But we all know league tables mean very little at this time of year however there are some players who are in better form than others.

Bristol Live have taken a look at all the individual performances so far this season and put together our power rankings after five matches.

Things can change dramatically in football so there could be plenty of movement in the coming weeks but this is how things currently stand.

Sam Matthews of Bristol Rovers

25. Sam Matthews

Age: 22

Position: Midfielder

Injured - something of an unknown quantity after being sent out on loan.

24. Luca Hoole

Age: 18

Position: Defender

Training with the first team squad but still to make his debut. One for the future.

23. Rollin Menayese

Age: 21

Position: Defender

Still likely to head out on loan having not feature this season.

22. Deon Moore

Age: 20

Position: Striker

Given a senior deal this summer but unused yet this season. A loan might be beneficial.

Lucas Tomlinson of Bristol Rovers in action against Swansea City

21. Lucas Tomlinson

Age: 18

Position: Midfielder

Impressed in pre-season but Coughlan is waiting for the right time to hand the youngster his senior debut.

20. Jordi van Stappershoef

Age: 23

Position: Goalkeeper

A bench warmer at the moment.

19. Michael Kelly

Age: 21

Position: Defender

The left back keeps making the match day squad but has not been called upon.

18. Tareiq Holmes-Dennis

Age: 23

Position: Defender

A starter when fit, but that does not appear to be soon.

17. Tom Nichols

Age: 25

Position: Striker

Now fourth choice and struggling for game time. The fans are so desperate for him to succeed but the wait continues.

Victor Adeboyejo

16. Victor Adeboyejo

Age: 21

Position: Striker

The forward on loan from Barnsley started the first two games of the season after scoring on his debut in pre-season but is yet to find the back of the net in a competitive match. He has however featured in every game since arriving at the Memorial Stadium. A top choice off the bench.

15. Mark Little

Age: 30

Position: Defender

The right back is an instant starter when fit.

14. Alex Rodman

Age: 32

Position: Midfielder

The winger is struggling with a knock but is the club's one legitimate out and out wide option. He shone in pre-season.

Kyle Bennett bursts forward for Bristol Rovers

13. Kyle Bennett

Age: 28

Position: Midfield

The attacking midfielder is a curious case. He looks good in spells, has beautiful tight control, but still needs a better end product, be that cutting passes or shots on target. His selection is something of a litmus test as to whether Coughlan is going attacking on not.

12. Luke Leahy

Age: 26

Position: Defender

The left back has been given quite a prominent role, taking most of the set-pieces this season. So far the jury is still out.

His defensive positioning has been questionable at times.

11. Liam Sercombe

Age: 29

Position: Midfielder

Rovers need Sercombe to shine. Graham Coughlan is now the second manager to have struggled to find a way to fit Sercombe into his side in his best position, as a central attacking midfielder, however the consensus is the starting XI is better when he is it.

Currently sidelined with injury.

Anssi Jaakkola of Bristol Rovers
Anssi Jaakkola of Bristol Rovers

10. Anssi Jaakkola

Age: 32

Position: Goalkeeper

The Finnish international is clear Coughlan's first choice keeper as Jordi van Stappershoef is yet to feature in a competitive match despite an unconvincing start to the season from Jaakkola. He has looked more assured as the season has gone on and was faultless on a quiet night against Tranmere.

Josh Hare whips one in

9. Josh Hare

Age: 25

Position: Defender

Hare's route into the starting side looked well blocked but injury to Mark Little has presented the summer signing from Eastleigh with the opportunity to show what he can do and going forward he has looked a threat. But his most potent weapon is the right foot cross which set-up Clarke-Harris' goal on Tuesday night and could well create many more this season.

Tony Craig of Bristol Rovers

8. Tony Craig

Age: 34

Position: Defender

The former Millwall man who is doing his coaching badges is undoubtedly one of the club's leaders and his no nonsense approach to football at centre back is right up Graham Coughlan's street. The Gas now have three cleansheets at home and if this defensive unit can cut out a few silly errors they could be really tight at the back again this season.

Abu Ogogo on the ball

7. Abu Ogogo

Age: 29

Position: Midfielder

When the going gets tough Graham Coughlan opts for combative midfielder Ogogo and with the manager wanting his side to ball for every ball there are none better than the defensive midfielder in his squad.

Ogogo was at his destructive best in the victory over Tranmere and actually got into several advanced positions, with a couple of decent long range efforts drawing saves.

In the past he has been criticised for not passing forward enough but he proved in the midweek victory he can.

Tom Davies moves forwards

6. Tom Davies

Age: 27

Position: Defender

The centre-back is getting better and steadier with each display after a slightly shaky start to the season. He looks commanding in the air and have been a good addition to the squad this summer.

Alfie Kilgour of Bristol Rovers is marked by Luke Varney of Cheltenham Town

5. Alfie Kilgour

Age: 21

Position: Defender

Talk about taking your opportunity. Kilgour was handed his first start against Cheltenham Town just over a week ago and is seemingly immovable in that position now after three strong displays. Coughlan speaks about players keeping hold of the jersey until they make an error, well Kilgour is holding on to his very tightly.

He displayed some beautiful long range diagonal passes to free the wing back and Tyler Smith against Tranmere which is another string to the centre-back's bow.

Ed Upson in action

4. Ed Upson

Age: 29

Position: Midfielder

The defensive midfielder is not everyone's cup of tea but at times this season he has sparkled and on Tuesday night Upson had one of his best games for the club in the 2-0 victory over Tranmere. He moved the ball quickly and accurately and seven went agonisingly close with two superb long range shots.

There is plenty of competition for places in central midfield and it seems to be bringing the best out of Upson.

Ollie Clarke of Bristol Rovers is challenged by Liam Ridehalgh of Tranmere Rovers

3. Ollie Clarke

Age: 27

Position: Midfield

When the skipper plays well, Rovers play well and so far this season his best displays have come against Cheltenham Town and Tranmere Rovers which just so happen to be the only games the club have won.

After a slow start to the campaign he looks to be returning to the form which saw him named the club's players' player of the year in 2018/19. Clarke just needs a goal now, he had a at least three long-range efforts against Tranmere but failed to strike the ball cleanly.  It will come.

Tyler Smith of Bristol Rovers steps up to take a penalty and scores his sides second goal of the game

2. Tyler Smith

Age: 20

Position: Striker

The striker, on loan from Premier League side Sheffield United, looks like the striker partner to Jonson Clarke-Harris that Coughlan has been searching for.

He is currently the club's top scorer with three, and could we have scored a hat-trick in the 3-0 win against Cheltenham Town in the League Cup, but instead made the mature decision to play in the better positioned Clarke-Harris.

He might be small, and there are plenty on social media who have questioned whether he can physically compete, but his pace makes him a real threat.

Jonson Clarke-Harris of Bristol Rovers
Jonson Clarke-Harris of Bristol Rovers

1. Jonson Clarke-Harris

Age: 25

Position: Striker

Last season's top scorer is looking sharper with each game after missing pre-season with an injury layoff and he certainly the first name on Graham Coughlan's team sheet. The forward scored his second of the season against Tranmere Rovers, burying a deft header.

Clarke-Harris' stats at Rovers continue to shine with 12 goals in 16 League One starts for the club and seven goals in seven home league starts.
