A pub in Bristol housed in an imposing gothic castle is going to be improved and restored to its former glory, according to its new owner.

Black Castle in Brislington, also known as Arno's Castle, has been owned by Greene King for nearly a decade but the history of the Grade 1 listed building goes all the way back to 1744, when it was used as a folly which incorporated office spaces and recreation rooms soon after being built.

According to historians it may have also been a stable block and laundry for the lord of the manor, and it was most likely designed by either William Halfpenny or James Bridges.

In recent years the pub hasn't exactly had the best reputation with the majority of reviews on TripAdvisor labelling it average at best.

Joe Magin is the new owner of the pub

But that all looks set to change after a new general manager with years of experience took over the reins.

Joe Magin previously worked for the Lounges group, managing the chain's inaugural bar on North Street in Bedminster.

But the 26-year-old is now looking forward to his new challenge: turning the fortunes of the Black Castle around.

"This pub has so much potential and I'm really looking forward to restoring it to its former glory," he said.

The pub is going to be brought up to a more presentable standard

"I've lived in the area for over four years now and over that time I've got the sense that the pub doesn't have the best reputation among locals.

"We're going to change that by becoming a much bigger part of the community, which we will do by holding more events including live music, a gin festival, darts matches, pool nights and more.

"Along with boosting the social aspect of the pub we're going to be doing a lot of work over the coming weeks to bring it up to a more presentable and modern standard.

"There's also a full refurbishment planned later down the line. It's a really exciting time for the pub and we're looking forward to the future."

Nine new members of staff have started at the pub and Joe said they are all looking forward to meeting customers and listening to their ideas on how to improve the pub.

The Black Castle stocks a wide range of drinks but Joe said he is considering introducing more ales to the menu to satisfy the tastes of locals.

The Black Castle is located on Junction Road, BS4 3BD and can be contacted on 01179 778720.
