MONTPELIER — Montpelier lost only three seniors from last year’s team, but the positions they played carried more than the small number might indicate.
That means that this year, coach Khrysta Coleman is having to fill some important positions on the floor for the Locomotives. The libero, setter and middle hitter positions will need to be filled this season for the Locos.
“That’s leaving a big hole, all three of them,” Coleman said.
Still, she’s hopeful that her six returning letterwinners will be able to carry the weight.
“With them, I’ve already moved a couple of them around,” Coleman said. “With the girls that are coming up from JV, I’ve been putting them in different positions than what they’re used to. I have a girl that will be setting for me (Jessi Bumb) and she is not a setter, per se, but she has good enough hands.”
Bumb is looking to fill the void that her sister, Hanna, left at the same position last season.
“She will be coming up and setting a lot for us,” Coleman said of Jessi’s new role. “She’s a coachable girl.”
With a couple positions still open, there’s still things to be decided for Montpelier.
The Locos won’t use a libero this year, or at least in the traditional sense, Coleman said. They’ll use Chelsea McCord, an outside hitter last year, in the middle position opposite Ariel Page this year.
“They’re a couple of tall girls that can jump, so we’ve got that advantage,” Coleman said.
That figures to be a strength for Montpelier this season, as the team is full of versatile girls that can play multiple positions. The Locos will be able to use a handful of line-ups throughout the season.
With a tight Buckeye Border Conference race expected, Coleman is hopeful her new girls can work with the returning letterwinners and form a team to compete for the top of the league.
