MONTPELIER — Randy Miller of the Northwest Ohio Rails-to-Trails Association (NORTA) updated Montpelier Village Council regarding progress on the trail project and asked the village to partner with his group.
Miller and members of the NORTA board have worked for the past 25 years to take the abandoned Wabash Cannonball Trail railroad track and turn it into a scenic gem suitable for walking. The trail now extends 63 miles from Lucas County to County Road 13 near Montpelier.
Miller thanked the village for its help and said that by becoming a partner, the village would be on the proverbial map, as the trail will soon connect with the North Country Trail, which begins in North Dakota and is within 100 miles of connecting to the Appalachian Trail.
Miller touted the benefits of walking and hiking as benefiting both physical and mental health. Members agreed a partnership was worth pursuing, and a few will attend the annual NORTA board meeting March 7 in Delta.
Also present at Monday’s council meeting were Don Brown and Thane Apt from the parks department and water department, respectively. They updated members on what their departments had been working on the past year. Members expressed appreciation for their departments and their efforts.
Council also approved an application by Family Dollar to begin selling carryout beer. It was noted that Dan McGee, police chief, had no objections.
The income tax report was heard, showing that $123,016.97 had been collected through January 2019, compared to $172,075.23 through January 2018. Nikki Uribes, finance director, said residents with questions or who need help filing their taxes could contact the village. Central Collection Agency of Cleveland will have a representative available in March to help residents also.
