It took some time for Montpelier’s bats to wake up in an ACME doubleheader at Edgerton on Wednesday, but in the end, the Locomotives did enough to sweep the Bulldogs. Montpelier won the first game 2-1 and followed it up with a 5-2 victory in the second game.
The teams played through four scoreless innings during the first game until Montpelier’s Gavin Wurm singled to score Blake Altaffer during the top of the fifth to give the Locos a 1-0 lead.
Edgerton responded during the bottom of the sixth and tied the game at 1-1 when Jaron Cape singled home Gannon Ripke.
However, Montpelier came right back during the top of the seventh and Altaffer wound up scoring from third on a wild pitch to put the Locos back up 2-1.
Edgerton had two men on during the bottom of the seventh with a chance to win or send the game to extra innings, but Montpelier’s Brayden Custer struck out Edgerton’s Isaiah Canales to end the game.
Custer also earned the win for Montpelier. He pitched 3 1/3 innings of relief and surrendered five hits, one run and struck out five. Altaffer got the start for the Locos and pitched 3 2/3 innings and allowed one hit with nine strikeouts.
Edgerton’s Rocco Green took the loss. He pitched 1 2/3 innings of relief and allowed one run with two walks and one strikeout. Ripke got the start for Edgerton and went 5 1/3 innings with nine strikeouts, seven walks and one run allowed.
During the second game — a five-inning affair — Montpelier put up four runs during the top of the third. Collin Crisenbery scored on an error, Connor Yahraus singled home Custer, Jace Norrick singled home Altaffer and Yahraus scored on an error.
The Locos added one more to take a 5-0 lead when Altaffer singled to score Aiden Higbie in the top of the fourth.
Edgerton showed some life and scored two runs during the bottom of the fifth, but it was all the offense it could muster, as Montpelier came away with the sweep.
“After the six inning of the first game, we had 12 guys left on base, at that point,” Montpelier coach Tim Sanders said. “And we told the guys, you can’t do that. We need to put the bat on the ball. We had quite a few third strikes that we watched go by today. Normally we’re not like that, but they looked flat.
“I told them the second game they needed to come out and pick it up. .. So at least they came back around the second game.”
Crisenbery was the winning pitcher in Game 2 for Montpelier. He went all five innings, gave up two runs, three hits and struck out two to cap a strong all-around pitching performance by Montpelier’s staff on Wednesday.
“The pitching has helped us out quite a bit,” Sanders said. “And with Blake and Collin back this week, it really helped out, too. We got some innings from those guys and it saves arms.”
