The Garage, which began in South Burlington five years ago as The Growler Garage, is shutting down its Burlington bar after business Saturday.

The Garage, a Burlington beer bar that began in South Burlington five years ago as The Growler Garage, will close after business Saturday, according to a notification posted Thursday night on Facebook.

“All great things must come to an end,” the post reads. “Saturday, August 10th raise your glass with us to celebrate our LAST CALL.” The event from 8 p.m. until closing will include games, prizes, drink specials - “until the well is Dry,” according to the Facebook post – and music from DJ Pilaf.

Owner Liam O’Farrell said Friday afternoon that it was a good time for The Garage to end its run.

"It's actually not a bad thing," he said. "It's time to move on to the next chapter." He plans to devote his full attention to Mountain Air Systems, the family business in Williston that he has run for 26 years.

"It was a great experience and we made a lot of great friends," O'Farrell said of The Garage.

The Growler Garage opened in a plaza off Dorset Street in South Burlington in 2014 as growlers – 64-ounce jugs filled at beer taps behind the bar – began to take off as a prime way to bring some of Vermont’s world-famous brews home to enjoy. The South Burlington space, which had 21 taps, closed a couple of years later to relocate to its current spot at the corner of Main and Battery streets in Burlington.

The trend toward growler filling stations began waning as the business moved to Burlington, and O'Farrell said the name change reflected that. He said The Garage became a full-service bar with a cocktail menu and pub food prepared in-house.
