A suspected car thief who police say led them on two car chases last week was apprehended on Saturday.

Thanks to a tip, Burlington police say they tracked down Gardner at a motel in Shelburne.

"When police arrived at the North Star Motel, a subject identified as Ian Gardner, 32, exited the room in question, observed the police presence, and immediately fled into the wooded area east of the motel," Burlington Police Deputy Chief Jon Murad said in an news release on Saturday.

Burlington officers, with help from South Burlington and Shelburne police departments, chased Gardner down and took him into custody.

Ian D. Gardner is wanted by Burlington police for allegedly stealing a car from Maple Street as well as a victim's credit cards and leading police on chases where he drove down Interstate 89 the wrong way.

Gardner is wanted in connection with the theft of a car from Maple Street in Burlington last weekend as well as stolen credit cards that police say he used to rack up hundreds of dollars worth of fraudulent charges. Police suspect Gardner of evading arrest in two car chases, including one incident of driving the wrong way down Interstate 89.
