A South Burlington man has been identified as the suspect in a hit-and-run that occurred during a recent snowstorm, city police said Tuesday.

Carl Willette, 52, was issued a citation to appear in Vermont Superior Court in Burlington in late February to answer charges related to the incident. Police expect him to be charged with leaving the scene of a crash and negligent driving.

South Burlington Police Sgt. Douglas Dubie said Willette turned himself in to police through his attorney.

Police requested help from the public in identifying the driver following the Jan. 20 crash, which was caught on video by a security camera facing out into a parking lot on Hinesburg Road.

The video showed a parked truck lurch forward before the owner of that truck — who had been nearby shoveling — confronted the driver of a red or maroon truck. Police later said the suspect's truck backed into the parked truck.

After several seconds of speaking, the suspect tried to leave the parking lot at a high speed, collided with a snow bank and almost hit a passing motorist, police have said.
