Today is "National Cheese Curd Day"! What better way to celebrate than sampling local poutine with the squeaky, cheesy goodness on top.

A happy customer with an offering from the Maudite Poutine food cart on Church Street in Burlington on Friday, June 2, 2017.

Here are some restaurants in our area acclaimed for their poutine dishes:

  • Bluebird Barbecue: Bluebird serves their Vermont cheddar curds two ways: either traditional or barbecue. In addition to barbecue sauce, the diner chooses between chopped brisket or pulled pork. 317 Riverside Ave, Burlington.
  • Maudite Poutine: This food cart, which can be found on Burlington's Church Street and traveling around the region, seems to be a favorite poutine spot for many locals. Keep up with them at vermontpoutine.com
  • Leunig's: A traditional French bistro, Leunig's serves a duck poutine. 115 Church Street, Burlington.
  • Halvorson's Upstreet Cafe: At Halvorson's the curds accompany braised short rib and truffle fries. 16 Church Street, Burlington.
  • Mule Bar: Mule Bar doesn't mess with a classic: hand cut fries, beef gravy and cheese curds. 38 Main Street, Winooski.
  • Skinny Pancake: The Skinny Pancake proves they are not only about pancakes or skinny with their traditional Quebecois style poutine with choice of Screaming Ridge Farm chicken gravy or housemade veggie gravy. 60 Lake Street, Burlington.

"National Cheese Curd Day" began in 2015 as a promotion for the fast food chain Culver's. It may have gotten its start in Wisconsin; however, if there's one thing Vermonters know, it's cheese.
