A popular Montpelier eatery that serves up southern comfort food will close on New Year's Day.

Down Home Kitchen, which was opened in 2015 by owner Mary Alice Proffitt, announced the business's closure recently on social media and the restaurant's website.

In her social media post, Proffitt said she was ending her Main Street business after five years to "move on to new adventures." The restaurant serves breakfast and lunch foods that are inspired by Proffitt's southern roots, hailing originally from Georgia.

"Our Capitol's best-located and most charming restaurant is in great shape and ready for new owners who love food + hospitality + community," Proffitt wrote in her social media posts.

She added, "We’re gonna miss you SO much! Come on in and eat with us these last two weeks!"
