Vermont high school highlights: South Burlington tops Montpelier in girls soccer

MONTPELIER - South Burlington tallied a pair of goals five minutes apart late in the second half to rally past Montpelier for a 2-1 high school girls soccer win on Saturday.

Ava Hamme tallied an unassisted tying goal in the 63rd minute and then set up teammate Nicole Sobczack for the winner five minutes later for the Wolves.

Chloe Schiff scored on a free kick for the Solons' strike in the ninth minute.

Montpelier goalie Georgia Schiff made 12 saves. Hannah Murray stopped two shots for South Burlington.

Burlington 2, Rice 1: Payton Karson and Sage Smith had the goals and Burlington defeated host Rice.

Sadie Vincent finished an Abby Mckeown corner kick for Rice's goal.

Colchester 6, Hartford 0: Madison Finelli and Jordan Clark each scored twice to power host Colchester over Hartford.

Elise Scorsome and Ellie Benoure also tallied goals and Olivia Moore and Emmakate O’Donnell combined for the two-save shutout for the Lakers.

Essex 3, Mount Anthony 2 (2OT): Emma Legg scored off Annalise Lubas' assist with 30 seconds left in overtime as Essex prevailed over host Mount Anthony.

Legg also assisted on Abby Robbins' game-tying goal early in the first half. Gabrielle Knight opened the scoring in the 15th minute and Jasmine Nsame posted nine saves for the Hornets.

For MAU, Allyssa Bullett and Jordan Madison (penalty kick) scored in the 38th and 39th minutes, respectively.

Mount Mansfield 5, North Country 1: Macy Wissell's hat-trick effort included a goal from the penalty spot as Mount Mansfield left Newport with the win.

Ava Esmay fired in two goals, with one assisted by Wissell, and Anna Betz made four saves.

For North Country, Grace Giroux scored.

U-32 4, Spaulding 0: Caroline Kirby scored three goals, including a penalty kick, and U-32 blanked rival Spaulding.

Kalli Parton also tallied and Jordan Kellett worked a three-save shutout for the Raiders.

Lindsey Lapan made six saves for Spaulding.

Stowe 2, Middlebury 1: Ciara Benfield produced the winner in the 73rd minute and Stowe nipped Middlebury.

Kaiya Gance also scored for Stowe. For Middlebury, Harper Sinclair tallied on a penalty kick.

Enosburg 4, Missisquoi 0: Erin Diette and Michaela Chase each scored and Enosburg benefitted from two Missisquoi own goals in the home win.

Alison Dash made seven saves for Enosburg. Emily King posted nine stops for MVU.

Hazen 2, Lake Region 1 (OT): Lizzy Brown scored in the 68th and 82nd minutes to lift Hazen over Lake Region in overtime.

Rosa Mohrmann tallied in the 15th minute for Lake Region.

Brianna Hislop posted 15 saves for Hazen. Ebony Coda had a dozen stops for Lake Region.

Mount Abraham 2, Vergennes 1: Jessica Colbeth scored in the 68th minute as Mount Abraham edged Vergennes.

Becca Laurent tied in the game in the 54th minute for the Eagles, while Olivia Paine and Justice Green combined on eight saves.

Ciara McClay earned a penalty kick goal for Vergennes. Kate Gosliga made five saves.

Milton 2, BFA-St. Albans 1 (OT): Emma Wennar scored twice, including the game-winner five minutes into overtime to lift Milton over BFA-St. Albans in a night game.

Lizzie Hill scored for BFA and Shelby Lang stopped 10 shots.

Madison North made five stops for the defending Division II champion Yellowjackets.

BOYS SOCCER

Essex 6, Mount Anthony 1: Noah Palker scored a hat trick, Spencer Towle had a goal and four assists and Essex pulled away from host Mount Anthony.

Will Deziel and Stefan DiGangi also tallied and Gordon Schmalz had three saves for the Hornets, who scored three goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half to build on its 2-0 halftime lead.

David Chorlton tallied for MAU in the game's final 10 seconds.

St. Johnsbury 5, Brattleboro 0: Denzel Ebohon, Malik Joell and Sajan Harvey each had a goal and assist as St. Johnsbury bested Brattleboro on the road.

Konrad Tillman and Alex Gingue tallied a minute apart, the latter on a 25-yard strike while Asom Hayman-Jones was credited with the shutout in goal for SJA.

FIELD HOCKEY

Burr and Burton 2, St. Johnsbury 1 (OT): Julia Fillion scored on a penalty corner with 1:57 left in overtime as Burr and Burton edged St. Johnsbury.

 Celsey McMahon also scored and Hannah Callen made two saves for BBA.

For SJA, Lilly Laufenberg tallied and Melanie Coons made six saves.

FRIDAY'S GAMES

FIELD HOCKEY

Champlain Valley 6, Burlington 0: Flynn Hall scored three goals and had one assist as host Champlain Valley did not allow a BHS shot on net in the shutout win.

Caroline Reynolds, Hailey Chase and Lena Ashooh (assist) also tallied for CVU.

Rotha Ibrahim posted nine saves for BHS.

Rice 3, Essex 2: Lisa McNamara scored her second goal of the game with 27 seconds to go, breaking a tie and lifting Rice over Essex.

Hadley Murphy also tallied and Mary Batsie made two saves in the Rice net.

For Essex, Hannah Neddo and Jamie Morei tallied while Kaylan Jerreria stopped three shots.

Mount Abraham 4, Harwood 0: Jalen Cook and Sydney Perlee scored in the first half and Olivia Heath and Molly Laurent tallied after the break to lead Mount Abraham to the win.

Chessley Jackman and Kira Murray combined for the shutout for the Eagles.

BOYS SOCCER

South Burlington 7, Rice 0: Abdi Hassan scored the first of his two goals in the 39th minute for a 1-0 halftime lead as visiting South Burlington pulled away with a strong second half.

Samy Slamani had a goal and two assists, Ben Knudsen tallied a goal and an assist and Brendan Bridge, Tommy O’Leary and Cody Bellinghiri also fired in goals for the Wolves.

Ben Capano made five saves for SB while Owen Greene pushed aside 12 shots for Rice.

Burlington 2, Montpelier 0:  Huessein Mubarak and Jake Manley scored in each half as Burlington won at Montpelier.

Elliot Maher made two saves for BHS. Jake Collier had eight stops for Montpelier.

Champlain Valley 6, Burr and Burton 0: Jack Sinopoli, Nate Sampson, Jonah Roberts, James Schmidt and Sam Johnson had the goals as visiting Champlain Valley rolled over Burr and Burton.

Aidan Johnson made one saves for the Redhawks, who also benefited from a BBA own goal.

Mount Mansfield 4, Middlebury 1:  Tabor Crary popped off a hat trick in the span of about 10 minutes of the first half to power Mount Mansfield over Middlebury.

Hunter Groff also scored and Ezra Bush made four saves for MMU.

Eben Jackson had Middlebury's goal and Lucas Palcsik's nine saves included a PK stop.

BFA-St. Albans 2,  Missisquoi 1: Cole Brace had one goal for  visiting BFA-St. Albans and its other score was an own goal in the win over Missisquoi.

Mitchell Bourdeau had the lone goal for Missisquoi.

Adam Martin recorded five saves for BFA while Kyle Gilbert had six saves for MVU.

Green Mountain Valley 1, Vergennes 0: Rowen Ainslie scored early in the second half for the difference in Green Mountain Valley's win at Vergennes.

Marcus Basciano stopped five shots in net for GMVS. Cameron McLaughlin  had two saves for Vergennes.

Milton 0, Woodstock 0: Milton and Woodstock battled to a 0-0 double overtime tie .

Nolan Deep made eight saves for Milton and Steven Bianchi had nine saves for Woodstock.

U-32 3, Northfield-Williamstown 1: Kayl Humke, Max Sabo and Nolan Bean had the goals in U-32's win over Northfield-Williamstown.
