Friday's H.S. highlights: South Burlington holds off Spaulding in boys basketball

BARRE -Two foul shots with less than four seconds to go gave South Burlington the cushion it needed to fend off Spaulding for a 63-60 win in high school boys basketball on Friday night.

The Wolves (7-7), who lost their last two games by combined five points, led 40-26 at halftime and pushed the advantage to 16 midway through the third quarter before the Crimson Tide (5-9) roared back.

Evan Parker’s 15-point night led four players in double figures for South Burlington. Brendan Bridge chipped in 14 while Owen MacDonough had 13 and Tyler Gammon 10.

Taylor D’Agostino paced the Crimson Tide with a game-high 17 points. Alex Coyle tallied 13 and Aidan Gilwee 10.

Rice 67, Champlain Valley 65: Michel Ndayishimiye polished off a 29-point second half with the game-winning 3-pointer as time expired to lift Rice over host Champlain Valley.

Ndayishimiye went end to end in four seconds for the walk-off victory for Rice (12-1), which trailed by as many as 18 points in the second half.

Leo Chaikin added 18 points for the Green Knights. Ndayishimiye's 29 points included 9-for-10 from the foul line in the fourth quarter.

Mason Otley scored 19 points and Bennett Cheer and Ethan Harvey each chipped 14 points for CVU (8-6). Harvey had given CVU a 65-64 lead with two foul shots prior to Ndayishimiye's heroics. 

Essex 46, Burlington 39: Stephen Astor went 9-of-10 at the foul line in the fourth quarter to help spur on Essex’s comeback win over visiting Burlington.

Robbie Meslin had a game-high 16 points for the 8-6 Hornets, who trailed 25-17 at halftime.

Jensen Daly led the Seahorses with a dozen points.

St. Johnsbury 56, Colchester 40: Five players scored for St. Johnsbury in the first quarter as the hosts grabbed a 15-9 lead and never looked back in a win over Colchester.

Logan Wendell posted a game-high 18 points for the Hilltoppers (10-4). Asom Hayman-Jones tossed in 10 and Alex Carlisle had nine.

Tyler Desjardin had 11 points for the 2-11 Lakers, including three 3-pointers

Middlebury 54, Enosbug 40: Parker Beatty (17 points) was one of three players in double figures as Middlebury topped Enosburg.

Tyler Buxton scored 12 points and Spencer Cadoret chipped in 11 for the Tigers.

Enosburg's Tommy Benoit scored 10 points.

Hazen 54, Peoples 36: Isaiah Baker scored 16 points and Hazen used a 24-9 fourth quarter to end Peoples' eight-game winning streak.

Elliott Kimball tossed in 14 points and Jay Lecours tacked on 10 for 11-1 Hazen.

Nick Holbrook had 11 points for PA (8-4).

BFA-Fairfax 51, Danville 44: Keegan Place scored 12 points and Everett Haddock flirted with a double-double, tallying 11 points and eight rebounds, as BFA-Fairfax toppled visiting Danville.

Cam Meunier added 12 rebounds for the Bullets.

Ian Steele paced Danville with 14 points.

U-32 81, Oxbow 35:  Jordan Hawkins poured in 32 points as U-32 raced past host Oxbow.

Anthony Engelhard scored 12 points and Bryson Richards had 10 for U-32 (9-5), who led 36-17 at halftime.

Matt Emerson had 13 points for Oxbow (8-7).

Girls basketball

Enosburg 36, Missisquoi 29: Hannah Burns scored 10 points and host Enosburg needed to hold off a late rally to top Missisquoi.

Marika Kuneau scored nine points for Enosburg (13-3), which led 21-9 at the break.

Macayla Langlois led all scorers with 15 points for MVU (5-11).

Mount Abraham 47, Vergennes 41: A 10-3 third quarter propelled visiting Mount Abraham to the road win over Vergennes.

Chloe Johnston (14 points), Jalen Cook (13) and Cora Funke (10) reached double figures for the Eagles (14-2), who have won 13 games in a row.

Brianna Vanderway had 16 points for Vergennes.

Boys hockey

Rutland 3, Middlebury 3: A pair of third-period goals helped visiting Rutland earn a tie at Middlebury.

Ryan Melen and Dillion Moore scored less than five minutes apart in the third for Rutland, Moore also assisted on Noah Crossman's first-period strike.

Kolby Farnsworth scored twice and Cooper O'Brien also tallied for Middlebury.

Middlebury's Jeffrey Stearns made 18 saves, twice as many as Shailer Evans had for Rutland.

Girls hockey

Middlebury 4, Burr and Burton 0: Aleta Mahters struck for two goals and Middlebury buried Burr and Burton.

Carlisle added a goal and two assists, Audrey Tembreull struck for the opening goal and Lydia Deppman posted eight saves for the Tigers (9-5).

For BBA, Lola Herzog made 22 saves.
