Twin State roundup: Vermont, New Hampshire split baseball twinbill

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION - Otter Valley's Josh Beayon produced a strong pitching performance in Game 2 to help Vermont earn a doubleheader split with New Hampshire in the 2019 Twin State Baseball Classic at the Maxfield Complex on Saturday.

In a pair of seven-inning games, New Hampshire won the opener 4-1 while Vermont earned a 11-3 triumph in the second contest.

Beayon, who went 2-for-2 with a double in Game 1, came on in the second inning of the second game and allowed just one batter to reach in a trio of scoreless frames. The lefty retired nine straight including five strikeouts in the win.

Beayon was named the Vermont MVP.

Derrick Stanhope allowed just two hits over three scoreless innings to lift New Hampshire in Game 1. Stanhope earned MVP honors for New Hampshire, which also benefited from Kegan Silovich's two-run triple.

In the Game 1 loss, Brattleboro's Adam Newton doubled and then scored on Wyatt Cameron's (Middlebury) hit for Vermont's lone RBI. Colby Brouillette of BFA-St. Albans belted a long triple.

Tyler Skaflestad (4-for-5) of Champlain Valley led the nightcap with a triple and came home on a single by Chandler Pouk of Burr and Burton as Vermont jumped out to a 1-0 lead. New Hampshire rallied with three unearned runs in the bottom half, taking advantage of three infield errors and two walks.

Vermont took control with a four-run third, sending nine hitters to the plate. Cameron rapped a two-run single and Becket Hill of Mount Mansfield added a RBI hit. Pouk made it 6-3 with a RBI groundout in the fourth before they added two more in the sixth on a two-run single by Skaflestad. They capped it with three more in the top of the seventh on five hits including run-scoring singles by Aaron Szabo of Fair Haven, Tyler Millette of Essex and Skaflestad. 

It is the fourth split in the fifth year of the annual border series that resumed in 2015 after an 11-year hiatus. Vermont had the lone sweep last year after the two teams split six one-run games in the first three meetings after the revival

The classic will likely again return to the Maxfield Complex next year, according to a news release.

Twin State field hockey 

Vermont 3, New Hampshire 0: A three-goal second half and stout defensive work paved the way as Vermont quieted New Hampshire in the rival states’ 36th annual meeting at St. Anslem College on Friday night

Bellows Falls’ Abbe Cravinho opened the scoring and Burr and Burton’s Brianna Mayne doubled the lead on an assist from Bellows Falls’ Molly Kelly.

Rice’s Lisa McNamara capped the scoring with an unassisted tally for a Vermont side that generated about 20 shots on goal.

Mount Mansfield’s Amelia Sanborn and Mount Abraham’s Chessley Jackman split time in the Vermont net and did not see a shot on net.

Twin State lacrosse

Vermont and New Hampshire split the 27th Byrne Cup at Lebanon High School on Saturday.

The results:

Girls — New Hampshire 23, Vermont 8: Hannah McCarthy tallied four goals and two assists and Amelia Bassett (two assists), Lyndon Flanagan (three assists), Sydney Lynch (assist) and Taylor Clark notched hat tricks to power New Hampshire over Vermont.

Elizabeth Day’s two goals paced the Vermont side. Francie Ettori (assist), Alli Charland, Caroline Desautels, Julia Fillion, Avery Galle and Emily Laframboise added single tallies for Vermont

Bella Beaton (nine saves) and Sam Porter (two) teamed up for 11 stops for New Hampshire.

In the Vermont net, Claire Phillips stopped four shots and Kathryn Jones turned back three.

Boys —Vermont 21, New Hampshire 5: Jake Baker racked up five goals and an assist, Jaden Elsinger pumped in four goals and Vermont blasted New Hampshire.

Jake Schaefer added a pair of strikes and two assists while Jeffrey Potter (goal, two assists), Steve Schmitt (two goals) and Lucas Piconi (two goals) also picked up multi-point games for the Green Mountain state.

Jed Astbury, Hayden Gallo, Reece Thompson and Caden White notched single goals and Gabe Marsicovetere and Alec Stevens combined on 13 stops for the winners.

Jakob Steele’s two goals and an assist led New Hampshire.
