Vermont H.S. playoffs: Burlington powers past Colchester

Jake Manley set up teammates Sam Hogg and Karl Daly four-minute apart in the first half as No. 7 Burlington breezed past 10th-seeded Colchester for a 5-1 victory in a Division I high school boys soccer playdown contest at Buck Hard Field on Tuesday.

Manley finished with a goal and two assists while Kelvin Kibabu and Manoj Karki rounded out the BHS scoring.

Thomy Mwali scored at the 77th minute to get Colchester on the scoreboard. Dominick Puttlitz made seven saves. 

For Burlington, Roshan Mager turned back five shots.

(8) Burr and Burton 5, (9) North Country 1: A Johnny Miceli strike early in the second half allowed host Burr and Burton to break free of North Country.

Jayden Bloom had a goal in each half and Duncan Chamberlain and River DeFelice struck 24 seconds apart during a four-goal second half for the Bulldogs.

David Gratton had a first-half equalizer for the Falcons.

(6) Mount Mansfield 4, (11) BFA-St. Albans 1: Tabor Crary and Will Hauf each had two goals and an assist and host Mount Mansfield overcame an early deficit to defeat BFA-St. Albans for the second time this season to advance.

Crary and Hauf each knocked in penalty kicks while Ezra Bush stopped five shots in the Cougar net.

Kam Dunsmore scored for the Bobwhites on a header via a corner kick. Caden Hart collected seven saves.

(4) Brattleboro 5, (13) Rice 2: Nick Campbell’s second goal with six minutes to go in the first half broke a 2-all tie and sent host Brattleboro to the win over Rice.

Alex Lier also struck twice and Luke Williams had a tally for the Colonels.

Rice's Sam Rubman  scored both of his team’s goals.

D-II boys soccer playdowns

(2) Middlebury 3, (15) Green Mountain Valley 0: Middlebury had a two-goal lead by the seventh minute and never looked back as it blanked GMVS.

Eben Jackson had two goals for the Tigers and Alex Bleich had the other. Andy Giorgio and Anthony Garner had assists, while Owen Lawton and Logan Pierson-Flagg combined for one save in the shutout.

Ryan Turnbull stopped 10 shots for the Gumbies.

(1) Stowe 2, (16) Stratton Mountain 0: A pair of second-half goals lifted Stowe past Stratton for the program’s first-ever D-II playoff victory.

Jack Seivwright and Jono Nissenbaum had the goals about 15 minutes apart, Alex Reichelt and Isaiah Schaefer-Geiger picking up the assists for the Raiders.

(10) Mount Abraham 2, (7) Montpelier 0: Branden Reynolds had both goals for Mount Abraham — both in the last 15 minutes — as the Eagles ousted host Montpelier.

Ethan DeWitt had five saves for the shutout. Eric McKean and Sam Schoenhuber logged assists.

Max Weinstein had four stops for the Solons.

(4) Milton 10, (13) Fair Haven 0: Nick Desouza and Vincent Hoffman supplied two goals apiece to power host Milton to the rout of Fair Haven.

Chance Rose had a goal and an assist while Kyle Brown, Zack Logan, Brandon Monahan, Colby Allard and Ethan van Harreveld added single tallies for Milton, which led 6-0 at the break.

Caden Button and Cooper Goodrich each had two assists and Sam Dooley did not need to make a save in net.

Kole Matta totaled 14 saves for Fair Haven.

(12) Missisquoi 1, (5) Hartford 0: Ryan Raleigh's unassisted strike 35 seconds into the second half lifted Missisquoi to an upset of Hartford.

Kyle Gilbert worked a five-save shutout for the Thunderbirds (4-10-1). Shane Miller had one save for the Hurricanes.

D-III boys soccer playdowns

(8) BFA-Fairfax 2, (9) Leland & Gray 1 (OT): Matt Spiller knocked in the game-winner goal from 6 yards out 3:48 into the first overtime to cap host BFA-Fairfax’s comeback win over Leland & Gray.

Isaac Decker forced overtime for the Bullets with a penalty kick with four minutes to play in regulation.

(3) Hazen 6, (14) Bellows Falls 0: Cody Davison struck twice in the opening minute, setting the tone in Hazen’s shutout of Bellows Falls.

Isaiah Baker added a goal and an assist, Reed Kehler handed out three assists and Finn Rooney, Mac Lanphear and Cody Hall had single goals for Hazen.

(7) Harwood 3, (10) Milton 1: Anna Jamieson and Siena Mazer each had a goal and an assist as host Harwood ousted four-time defending champion Milton.

Tanum Nelson added another goal on a free kick and goalie Amaya Rogers had six saves for the Highlanders (8-5).

Molly Loucy bagged a late goal and Kay Fagan had eight saves for the Yellowjackets, who finish at 6-8-1).

(4) Montpelier 3, (13) Woodstock 0: Lucia McCallum provided a goal and two assists to fuel Montpelier's win over Woodstock.

Aleah Dyson and Lily Gingold had the other tallies for the Solons (11-1-3), who got a one-save shutout from Georgia Schiff.

(9) Rice 5, (8) Hartford 1: Alex Dostie and Autumn Carstensen each had two goals and an assist to lead visiting Rice past Hartford.

Melanie Dostie had the other goal for the Green Knights (8-6-1), who led 3-0 by halftime and got six stops from Khadija Hussein.

Reilly Slusser had the lone goal for Hartford and Kaylyn Bills had three saves.

(3) Fair Haven 3, (14) Green Mountain Valley 0: Kerigan Disorda put away two goals for host Fair Haven as it topped Green Mountain Valley.

The result was the Slaters' first postseason victory since 2010 and only the second since 2002.

Emma Briggs added the other goal for 11-2-2 Fair Haven. Emma Ezzo supplied three saves for the shutout.

(12) Missisquoi 1, (5) Stratton Mountain 0 (2OT): Alex Brouillette broke the stalemate in the second overtime as visiting Missisquoi captured its first playoff game since 2011.

MVU also handed Stratton its first loss of the season.

Madison Conley turned back 10 saves for the clean sheet.

D-III girls soccer playdowns

(2) Vergennes 2, (15) Bellows Falls 0: Host Vergennes outshot Bellows Falls 39-0 in its first-round victory.

Emily Rooney delivered a goal in each half for the Commodores (9-4-1). Hannah Kelly and Sydney Weber logged assists and Kate Gosliga had the shutout.

Corina Mitchell made 16 saves for the Terriers.

(5) Enosburg 2, (12) Northfield/Williamstown 0: Lacie Reed struck each side of halftime as host Enosburg earned its first playoff win since 2011.

Zoe McGee repelled 17 shots in the shutout for the Hornets. Ciera Sweet had 13 saves for N/W.

(4) Peoples 3, (13) Lake Region 1: Anna Isselhardt posted a hat trick as Peoples cruised past Lake Region.

Shelby Wells and Arianna Keene each had assists for the Wolves. Josie Simone turned away four shots.

Allyson Cotnoir had the Rangers' goal. Ebony Cota made six saves.

(1) Thetford 7, (16) Randolph 2: Casey MacVeagh tallied twice as defending champion Thetford opened a 5-0 halftime lead in its win over Randolph.

Namya Benjamin, Sophie Williams, Lily MacVeagh, Becca Wells, Madi Powers and Geneva Horster added single markers for the Panthers. 

(3) Leland & Gray 1, (14) Green Mountain 0: Arin Bates had the only goal as host Leland & Gray slipped past Green Mountain.

Izzy Ameden set up the tally and Sydney Hescock stopped two shots for the shutout.

D-IV girls soccer playdowns

(7) Twin Valley 4, (10) Hazen 0: Sadie Boyd's hat trick propelled host Twin Valley to a first-round shutout victory against Hazen.

(9) Sharon 2, (8) Black River 1: Molly Lewis had two unanswered goals for visiting Sharon as it rallied from an early deficit to oust Black River.

(5) Arlington 9, (12) Richford 1: Lilah Ward piled up three goals and three assists as host Arlington overpowered Richford.

Lilith Fuchs (two assists) and Nathalia Hoyt added two goals apiece. Denita Moore stopped four shots for the Eagles (10-5)

Liz Snider had the goal for the Rockets and Austin Archambault had 11 saves.

No. 1 Proctor 7, No. 16 Mount St. Joseph 0: Maggie McKearin's hat trick set the tone as top-ranked Proctor rolled to a shutout win against Mount St. Joseph.

(2) West Rutland 10, (15) Poultney 2: Jenee McGee put up a hat trick, while Anna Cyr and Kiana Grabowski had two goals apiece in West Rutland's rout of Poultney.

D-I field hockey playdowns

(8) Rutland 3, (9) Burlington 2: Alexis Patterson scored twice and Katie Sunderland also tallied as Rutland built a three-goal margin only to need to fend off Burlington's late comeback bid.

Shaniel Gulfield knocked in a goal on Burlington's eighth corner of the game with 14 minutes to play. About a minute later, Grace Kahl drew Burlington to within 3-2.

D-II field hockey playdowns

(8) St. Johnsbury 3, (9) U-32 0: Alexis Duranleau tallied once and had an assist in St. Johnsbury's shutout of U-32.

Hannah Roberts and Haleigh Daft also scored for the Hilltoppers.

U-32's Kaelyn Hayward made eight saves.  Elizabeth Mastroianni-Douglass stopped 15 shots for SJA.

(7) Middlebury 3, (10) Brattleboro 1: Three players found the back of the net for Middlebury as it toppled visiting Brattleboro.

Phoebe Smith, Ali Seaton and Lexi Bartlett each had a goal for the Tigers, while Ileigh Aube made two saves in the win.

Edie Cay tallied for the Colonels. Brittney Wright and Kailyn Bailey had nine saves.

D-III field hockey playdowns

(8) Montpelier 2, (9) Milton 1: Cece Curtin had the tying goal and then set up the winner as Montpelier toppled Milton. 

Zoie Masure scored the go-ahead tally with 10 minutes to play for the Solons.
