Memorial services planned for 10-year-old girl who died from gunshot wound

Funeral services have been announced for a 10-year-old Blackfoot, Idaho, girl who died Sunday after suffering from a gunshot wound near Montpelier. The memorials are taking place as deputies continue to investigate her death.

The funeral for Ariel May Gerstlauer is planned for Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Hawker Funeral Home, according to her obituary. She will be buried at the Riverside-Thomas Cemetery.

Gerstlauer was in the third grade at Blackfoot Community Charter School. She enjoyed music, make-up, camping, and spending time with family and friends.

Bear Lake County sheriff’s officials were called Sunday on report that Gerstlauer had been shot near U.S. Highway 30. Law enforcement officers and medical workers responded and pronounced her dead at the scene. It was later determined that she died of a single gunshot wound from a .22.

The shooting remains under investigation. No charges have been filed.
