An investigation has been launched after two bin men were thrown from a lorry earlier this week.

South Cambridgeshire Council  have confirmed three of its refuse workers were injured in the crash on Tuesday morning (March 19).

A refuse lorry carrying two passengers was travelling along Cambridge Road between Fowlmere and Newton around 11.30am when it overturned.

Its driver and one of the front seat passengers were thrown from the vehicle by the impact and taken to Addenbrooke's with serious, but non life-threatening, injuries.

A third man, who remained in the overturned vehicle, was taken to the same hospital with minor injuries.

The men have not been named.

A spokesman for the Greater Cambridge Shared Waste Service, who manage bin collections in central Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire said: “Three of our staff were taken to hospital following this crash and our number one priority right now is continuing to support them and their families.

"We’re working with Cambridgeshire police and the relevant authorities to investigate what happened when one of our collection trucks left the road on the B1368 between Newton and Fowlmere on Tuesday March 19 at around 11:30am.

"It wouldn’t be right to comment further while those investigations are taking place.”

The council added bin collections were not impacted by the incident.

Police are now appealing for anyone with any information following the crash to come forward.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or believe they saw the HGV prior to the collision should call police on 101 quoting incident 161 of  March 19. Alternatively you can report online by visiting cambs.police.uk/report
