Cambridge jam-packed as bank holiday sun draws people out

Lockdown restrictions have eased somewhat but it can be difficult for people to observe social distancing when it's so busy

The banks of the Cam are always a hotspot and this bank holiday is no different

Cambridge city centre was heaving this bank holiday Monday (May 25) as people flocked outside to enjoy the spring sunshine.

Tensions are high in the country right now as chief aide to the prime minister Dominic Cummings faces intense backlash for breaking lockdown multiple times.

The fall out has sparked concern that the scandal will encourage others to wilfully interpret the guidance at a time when restrictions are being lifted gradually.

At the time of writing, the rules remain that you can meet one person from another household outdoors, while maintaining social distancing; you can spend as long as you want outside while social distancing; house viewings and moves can resume in England.

The official line continues to be "Stay at home, stay alert, save lives."

Before the bank holiday Cambridgeshire Constabulary  (@Cambscops)tweeted: "This Bank Holiday weekend we all have a role to play in reducing the spread of COVID-19. Limit contact with people, stay 2 metres apart in public, wash your hands regularly. This will help us all stay safe while enjoying the long weekend."

While most people in Cambridge are likely following the guidance this bank holiday, the size of the city centre and its many narrow, cobbled pathways have made it tricky.
