A new Tesco Express looks set to open in Cambridge city centre after the supermarket secured a licence to sell alcohol.

Tesco was originally denied approval to sell alcohol from 5 Christ’s Lane by the Cambridge City Council licensing committee on February 4.

The supermarket took the dispute to Cambridge Magistrates’ Court, but before the case could properly get under way, Tesco revised its intended alcohol sales hours, and the case was sent back to the council.

The previous application was rejected on the basis it would have been against the council’s cumulative impact policy, which advises against having too many licensed premises in certain areas.

Tesco Express’ final approved application says the store would be open from 6am to 11pm daily, and it has been granted a licence to sell alcohol between 11am and 8pm.

The previous application, which was denied, sought a licence to sell alcohol between 7am and 10pm.
