A high school is currently taking precautions to protect their students and staff after reports of gun shots being heard nearby.

Lea Manor High School, in Luton, Beds, has confirmed that pupils are being kept inside as a "precaution" but lessons are ongoing.

Bedfordshire police rushed to the school at around 1.45pm today and confirmed that shots were heard in the woods adjacent to the school.

A staff member at the school said: "Shots were heard near the PE department, the school’s main priority is the children so the school is on lockdown, nobody is allowed in or out of the school.

“The police are here now.”

A police spokesperson said: "We were called at 1.45pm today to a report of gunshots from woods next to Lea Manor High School, Luton.

"A search proved negative and pupils were kept inside for a short period as a precaution. Nothing suspicious was seen at the school. Officers remain on hand for reassurance."

Lea Manor High School tweeted that it took 'precautions to protect our pupils, staff and visitors, but lessons continued as usual as there was no threat'.
