The Met Office has issued a snow and ice severe weather warning for Bedfordshire this weekend.

The yellow warning says to expect periods of freezing rain, which can cause ice to form on roads, pavements, trees and other structures. The severe weather may lead to dangerous driving conditions and may cause travel delays on the road, rails and at the airport.

The warning runs from 9am Saturday, December 15 to 9am Sunday, December 16.

Saturday will be cloudy with a high of 2C and a low of 0C. On Sunday the sun will peak out of the clouds and temperatures will warm up slightly with a high of 7C and a low of 2C.

There is a 80 per cent chance or higher of rain from 3pm to 7pm on Saturday.

The warning read: "Periods of freezing rain, with snow in Scotland later, leading to some dangerous travelling conditions."

In parts of northern England and Scotland an amber warning for snow and ice is in place.

What to expect from the warning, according to the Met Office

The Met Office said: "Freezing rain is expected to develop during Saturday, lasting into the early hours of Sunday. This may result in the formation of ice on roads, pavements, trees and other structures. Freezing rain is rare in the United Kingdom, but when it does occur impacts can be severe.

"This is due to the fact that it can form very quickly, it can be difficult to see, and is incredibly slippery. Freezing rain is likely to change to snow before it dies out across parts of Scotland, bringing some accumulations of 2-5 cm.

"The freezing rain and snow will be accompanied by strong southeasterly winds which will pose an additional hazard to travel, in particular over high ground."

Drivers are being warned that there may be travel delays on roads and there is the risk some vehicles and passengers may be stranded.

There may also be delays or cancellations to rail and air travel.
