Annapolis High School officials sent a letter home to parents Tuesday to quash rumors of potential violence stemming from a fight between several students during the school day on Friday.

The letter informed parents there was not a threat to the school and “to make you aware of a situation that seems to be festering in our community so that you can have appropriate information to discuss with your child,” principal Patrick Gelinas wrote.

Gelinas wrote that over the weekend, and during school Monday, rumors were spread that one of the students involved in the fight was going to return and “do something.” Officials investigated the threat and determined it wasn’t coming from the student in question, and police and school officials have spoken to the student and his family.

“I want to be very clear that there have been no online posts from the person that the threat is centered around,” Gelinas’s wrote.

He told parents police were involved in the matter and school resource officers have been made aware of all the “second- and third-hand rumors posted in texts, chats, etc.” since the Friday fight.

He said the school, after taking appropriate disciplinary action on Friday, remained vigilant and urged anyone in the community with information relevant to the incident or aftermath to contact the school or police.
