Since taking office in June of 2017, I have made replacing our failing outdoor pool a priority. I talked with the City Commission, and they agreed that the City needed a plan. I’m very pleased to report, we’re about to get one!
On Tuesday, Feb. 19, the nine-member Outdoor Pool Committee I appointed last February will present its plan to replace Pierre’s current outdoor pool.
I don’t know about you, but I’m very excited to hear the details of their proposal! You’ll remember, the Committee is a group of citizens, who have been working together with a pool consultant and City Staff for a year to understand the needs, wants and realities of replacing Pierre’s more than 90-year-old municipal swimming pool.
I know they have looked at facilities in like-sized communities, studied local demand, considered operating costs, scouted location sites and worked very hard to understand community priorities. I also know they have worked with the City’s finance team to find a way to fund a pool without raising your taxes. And the proposal has received a unanimous endorsement from the City’s Park and Recreation Board.
On Feb. 19, the full City Commission will get its first look at the plan.
If you too are interested in learning more about the proposed project, I invite you to Tuesday’s commission meeting. You are more than welcome to attend in person at Pierre City Hall. You can also view the meeting live online at Oahetv.com or on live on Oahe TV Channel 8 or Channel 608. The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m.
I very much look forward to the unveiling of the Committee’s report and recommendations!
