Mahindra’s latest sub-compact SUV packs segment-first features. But how does it fare against the Hyundai Creta, the undisputed leader of a segment above?

The Mahindra XUV300 sub-compact SUV was launched on February 14 with the prices ranging between Rs 7.90 lakh to Rs 11.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). It is offered with various segment-first features and is one of the more premium offerings in its segment, which consists of cars like the Maruti Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport and the Honda WR-V. The XUV300 has proportions and specifications that can even compete with the likes of compact SUVs from a segment above, such as the Hyundai Creta.

Hence we thought it best to pit similarly priced variants of the XUV300 and the Creta against each other to see which of them offer better value for money (purely on the basis of features on offer at a given price).

Hyundai Creta

Sub-4m SUV: The XUV300 is less than four metres in length, which has allowed Mahindra to price it lower than the Hyundai. However, it actually has a longer wheelbase than the Creta.

Compact SUV: Hyundai leads the compact SUV segment and due to its proportions (over 4m in length), it is priced higher and sits a segment above the XUV300.

Manual only: The XUV300 gets a 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engine. Both of them come mated to a 6-speed manual transmission only as of now.

Plenty of drivetrain choices: The Creta is offered with a choice of one petrol engine - a 1.6-litre unit - and two diesel motors - a  1.4-litre and 1.6-litre - depending upon the variant. The 1.6-litre engines can be had with a 6-speed automatic apart from the standard 6-speed manual gearbox. The smaller 1.4-litre engine can be had with a manual transmission only.

Rivals: Its main rivals are other sub-compact SUVs like the Ford EcoSport, Tata Nexon, Maruti Vitara Brezza and Honda WR-V.

Rivals: The Creta’s main rivals are the Maruti S-Cross, Nissan Kicks, Renault Duster and Captur.
