Though Jake Gyllenhaal donned the fishbowl helmet to become Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home, it has long been rumored that Bruce Campbell would have played the classic villain in the fourth installment of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man series.

While Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy was successful and a fourth movie was planned, it ultimately never materialized. Over the years, rumors began circulating regarding how the film would have played out, including one that involved The Evil Dead's Bruce Campbell -- who had previously made cameos in all three of Raimi's Spidey films -- playing Mysterio.

When the rumors were brought up in an interview with Flickering Myth, however, Campbell was quick to shut them down. "That was a fanboy thing that started," he said. "Do you know Sam Raimi never sent, like, an email or a phone call saying, 'Hey Bruce, uh, prepping Spider-Man 4, what do you think about Mysterio?' That conversation never happened."

In true Bruce Campbell fashion, he was also sure to poke fun at Jake Gyllenhaal, saying, "Isn't dreamy Jake Gyllenhaal... isn't he Mysterio anyway?" When told that Gyllenhaal was "pretty awesome", Campbell replied, "I'll bet he's awesome. Now he can go back to his little darling indies again."
