FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — A man wanted in a double-shooting that left a pregnant woman dead earlier this month was arrested Sunday night in Fayetteville, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said.

Authorities had been searching for the suspect in a Dec. 5 shooting on Spur Drive in the Buckhead Farms subdivision that left Thailia Thomas, 26, dead and injured a 33-year-old woman.

Thomas was pregnant and the baby did not survive, the sheriff’s office said.

Detectives were searching for a man, possibly in his 20s, described as having a medium build, light complexion and standing approximately 5 foot 8 to 6 feet tall with wavy, close cut hair.

The suspect was seen driving away in a newer model four-door Ford F-150 pickup truck.

On Sunday, a Fayetteville police officer noticed a white Ford F-150 that matched the description of the vehicle seen leaving the scene of the shooting.

According to authorities, the officer detained the driver, who also matched the description of the suspect.

Homicide detectives from the sheriff’s office responded to the scene and took the truck and the driver, 21-year-old Markez Jaquan Mcgriff, of Fayetteville, into custody.

Mcgriff was then arrested and charged with Thomas’ murder and for shooting the other woman.

Officials have not said what led to the shooting, but did say how Thomas and Mcgriff knew each other.

“The victim met the suspect online and, as most online, when you meet people, you don’t know who they are or what they’re about. It’s very dangerous when you go about meeting people this way,” said Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Sean Swain.

Mcgriff is charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. He is being held on no bond and has a first court appearance scheduled for Monday.
