In photos from the scene, a car could be seen upside down.

According to the wreck report, Nicholas Cook, of Wendell, was heading west on Wake Forest Road in his 2004 Saturn sedan when the vehicle went into a curve while speeding and lost traction on the road and began to slide sideways. Cook overcorrected and the car went off the road to the right, flipped on its roof and crashed. Cook was partially ejected from the vehicle, according to the report. Cook was pronounced dead at the scene.

The wreck report indicates that police believe Cook was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
