RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – A Raleigh police officer was traveling at 80 mph when he ran off an I-40 exit ramp and hit a vehicle before rolling down an embankment on Monday, the police chief said.

Officer D.P. Green was transporting two K-9 officers when he took exit 298B off Interstate-40 east around 9:30 p.m.

An initial wreck report released by Raleigh police said Green’s patrol vehicle was traveling at 60 mph, the posted speed limit, when he lost control and traveled onto the ramp to I-40 east.

Green’s vehicle hit a pickup being driven by a Craven County man before overturning down an embankment.

“However, after further investigation, it was determined Officer Green was speeding in excess of 80 mph just prior to the crash,” Chief Cassandra Deck-Brown said in a release. “Officer Green was not responding to a call for service and his emergency equipment was not activated.”

Deck-Brown said Green’s vehicle was not equipped with a dashcam when the crash occurred.

“After consulting with the District Attorney’s Office, the Raleigh Police Department has charged Officer Green by citation with Exceeding a Safe Speed. An investigation is ongoing,” the chief said.

A Raleigh police veterinarian checked out the K-9s, Lucy and Hugo, and determined they were not injured.

The police vehicle sustained $20,000 in damage while the other vehicle had estimated damage of $5,000, the initial wreck report stated.
