MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Nearly 100 people came out to a peace rally to speak out against Milwaukee’s gun violence.
This comes after Shamariona McCloud, 11, was hit by a bullet Tuesday night. She was inside her grandmother's house near 44th and Locust, when a bullet went through the window and struck her.
Fortunately, she survived.
Community members, activists and city leaders gathered to lend their support.
“The sad thing about this is that, Shamariona was a victim of gun violence,” said Tracey Dent, community activist.
Some of her friends and teammates from her dance team C.C.D.T. were in attendance.
“When I heard about this, I texted her and I told her, you’re gonna be okay,” Mickeya Robinson said.
Shamariona is recovering from the shooting. She had surgery, but the bullet will remain in her back.
Alderman Tony Zielenski said he’s fed up with the violence. “This type of behavior where an 11-year-old girl has to worry about living in her own house and getting shot, that unacceptable.”
However, Shamariona and her family remain strong.
“It could’ve been the other way around. Death could’ve taken over, but by the Grace of God and by the hands of God, the angels of the Lord was watching over this home,” said Mayra Pierre, great-aunt of Shamariona.
Two people of interest in the shooting have been arrested.
