The management at Chester's Costco store have put a number of specialist traffic management systems in place this year to avoid the Christmas parking and traffic jams debacle seen last year.

Christmas shoppers reported gridlocked traffic and heated exchanges between motorists at the Costco warehouse in Chester last December, with Cheshire police even being called to help things run more smoothly at one point.

But this year, to avoid the gridlock that comes with the festive shopping rush, Costco have adopted a number of measures in the hope of minimising any traffic issues for customers.

These measures include working alongside Cheshire West and Chester Council to allow more traffic to pass through Dunkirk trading estate, and even employing a 'professional traffic management system' in the car park.

The special measures were outlined in an email sent to Costco members by the general manager at Costco Chester, Joanne Finn.

In the email, seen by CheshireLive, Ms Finn also apologised to members for the traffic problems of last year, saying that the measures introduced this year are 'preventative' in a bid to manage the situation better.

Ms Finn said: "Following the traffic congestion issues experienced last December at our Chester warehouse, I would like to take this opportunity to update you on the preventative measures that we have introduced to better manage the situation this year.

"Firstly, we have worked closely with the local highways authority, Chester and Cheshire West Council, to improve the phasing of the traffic lights to enable more vehicles to pass through the Dunkirk Trading Estate.
