Talking things through is the secret to a happy marriage, according to a Chester couple celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.

Fred and Sandra Davies from Saughall are marking half a century of marriage this month and four children and eight grandchildren later married life is still as blissful as ever.

The pair met at a Christmas party in the vehicle licensing department at The Castle at Chester in 1962 when Sandra was 17 and Fred was 19.

They married in June 1969 at St Paul's Church in Ellesmere Port with a reception at Chester's Queen Hotel and a honeymoon in Ross on Wye.

Two years later their son Mark was born, followed by Sue and twins Katie and Paul and they're now the proud grandparents of eight grandchildren.

And their secrets to a long and successful marriage? To never go to sleep in silence and always keep the lines of communication open.

"Our advice would be never to go to sleep without speaking to each other. Always try and talk things through if you can," suggested Fred.

Fred and Sandra will celebrate their anniversary on the Lady Diana showboat on the River Dee with some fish and chips and their family and friends.
