Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service is recruiting two assistant fire officers who will each receive £109,837 per annum with a relocation package worth up to £10,000 and a lease car.

Cheshire chief fire officer Mark Cashin created a fresh management structure when he took over from Paul Hancock last year.

He wanted two assistant chief fire officers to support him in place of just one deputy.

Area managers Alex Waller and Gus O’Rourke were appointed to the assistant roles on a temporary six-month basis but now the jobs have been advertised on a permanent basis both internally and externally.

CheshireLive has received comments from disgruntled ex-fire service employees concerned about ‘top heavy’ management yet fewer firefighters.

The job advert states: “Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service is a high performing, innovative and progressive organisation that has high ambitions for the service that it provides to the communities and people of Cheshire.

“Due to the recent appointment of a new chief fire officer and chief executive and subsequent brigade manager restructure, the fire authority are now seeking to appoint two new assistant chief fire officers to help lead the organisation and build upon the significant progress that has been achieved in recent years.

“The successful candidates will need to have a detailed understanding of the issues relating to the fire and rescue service at national and local levels, strong political awareness and be inspiring and outstanding leaders.

“The fire authority will also be looking for individuals who are genuinely committed to diversity, inclusion and staff engagement with the ability to demonstrate resilience, excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to execute ambitious programmes of change.”

There will be a two stage assessment process to be held on March 26 and April 2, with only those successful at stage one progressing to the second stage.
