A graphic design student at the University of Chester has been announced as the first winner of the bi-annual student illustration competition to decorate the boardwalk entrance space of Bold Street Studios in Liverpool .

Becki Coverdale has won the street art (StArt) competition, which gives students the chance to demonstrate their creative skills and showcase their work in the centre of the city, as well as winning £1,000.

The brief given was Be fresh. Be vibrant. Be independent. Be modern. Be ambitious. Be Bold.

The competition was organised by Uniform, a design and innovation company employing more than 60 staff in Liverpool and London and recently celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Uniform owns and operates Bold Street Studios - a place for creative, digital and tech companies to work together that aims to become one of the key creative and digital hubs in the city.

Becki said: “My inspiration was driven from Liverpool’s vibrant architecture, landmarks and people.

“The River Mersey runs throughout the panels, whilst geometric shapes spring up representing different buildings of Liverpool.”

Nick Howe, managing director of Uniform, said: “We loved the dynamic, bold and fresh approach to Beki’s work - the colours really draw you in and reflect the creativity of the Bold Street Studios offer.”

Bernadine Murray, head of the department of art and design at the University of Chester, said: “This competition is a great opportunity for emerging artists and designers to have their work seen by a vast range of audiences.

“Beki is a deserving winner and worked hard alongside the amazing creative team at Uniform to bring her ideas to fruition.

“This opportunity has brought a renewed confidence to her work and the experience and exposure she has gained will be invaluable to her future career as a designer.”

Becki’s work has been installed in the entrance to Bold Street Studios, a new place for creative, digital and tech companies.
