A Dutch-inspired artisan chip shop o fficially opened its doors on Chester's Northgate Street on Saturday (February 9).

And to celebrate, the first 100 guests through the door after it opened at 12pm, received a free cone of chips.

The new eatery has been inspired by the 'twice fried' potato chips and sauces that are commonly served in the Netherlands, a concept founder Andrew McKechnie wanted to bring to Chester's burgeoning food scene.

Using a variety of potato which is recognised as the best in the Netherlands, Chip’d follow a ‘Chip, Flip, Dip’ cooking process and when they're perfectly fried, they're flipped in sea salt and served in a cone.

Chip'd is the latest addition to Northgate Street

Speaking to CheshireLive, Andrew said: "I first came across the concept in Utrecht which is a city that really reminds me of Chester.

"It’s a beautiful, vibrant city with lots of amazing independent bars & restaurants. Similar to what I see when I walk around Chester."

He added: "Being from the Wirral I am a regular visitor to Chester and I have some good friends who live here.

"Whilst doing my research and looking for premises, I spent a lot of time walking around Chester and people watching.  Northgate Street was where I gravitated to because of the great bars and restaurants.

"Storyhouse, Jaunty Goat and Marmalade have become my work office whilst doing the shop fit!"

And Andrew passionately believes Chip'd customers will find 'the best chips they've ever tasted'.

"We put all our focus on the chips, using the best ingredients and a simple Dutch cooking method to create chip heaven," he said. "

And a cool shop which we are really proud of - although it has nearly bankrupt me!

As well as the chips, there are a range of Dutch sauces and dips to accompany them, including ketchup, curry ketchup, vegan mayo and satay, as well as the Netherland's famous Frites sauce.

Andrew says his personal favourite is curry ketchup because 'it’s got a bit of a kick and goes really well with a hot fresh chip'.

Chip'd will be open seven days a week from 11am till 6pm and 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
