Singer Cerys Matthews is offering a free ticket to a carer from the Chester area who can accompany a disabled man to the annual Good Life Experience festival in Hawarden next month.

Steve West has been desperate to travel to Cerys' food, music and craft festival on the Hawarden Estate from his home in Cardiff ever since the event started five years ago but his chronic spine pain has always prevented him from making the journey.

This year he was determined to celebrate his birthday at the festival and even booked his train, but may be forced to cancel his trip because he cannot find a carer to accompany him.

However, after reading about Steve's plight on Twitter, Cerys has pledged to provide a ticket to a carer in Chester or North Wales who can accompany Steve to the festival so he doesn't have to miss out.

She tweeted: "I wish there were a carer/volunteer in Chester/North Wales region to come to festival with Steve? Mid Sept/I’d sort you tickets. Please (tweet) Steve and me if possible."

Steve, 55, has been disabled since a fall in 2006 fractured his spine and has endured several operations ever since.

He told Cheshire Live: "I have been trying to get to the Good Life Festival for for years and each time my chronic spine pain cancelled plans.

"I had hoped to go this year but I need a carer to deal with my medications and cannot find one, which means I cannot go yet again.

"The frustration has brought back the evil depression but I hope to sponsor a disabled tent there and call it Steve's Space so I can be there in spirit.

"At the moment I have a carer for breakfast and lunch and a district nurse to change the dressing on my ulcerated foot - if it gets infected my foot comes off.

"I simply cannot manage at the festival on my own," he added.
