SIGNIFICANT traffic disruption is expected in Chester city centre on Tuesday and Wednesday this week as emergency repairs are carried out on a burst water main at Grosvenor Roundabout.

Severn Trent Water began carrying out the works at 9.30am on Tuesday, November 27 and is scheduled to complete works at 6am on Thursday, November 29.

During the time of the works, the inside lane of the roundabout will be coned off, restricting traffic flow.

It had been hoped both lanes would remain open during peak time.

However, an update posted on Tuesday afternoon by the council said: "Unfortunately the leak is worse than anticipated and there has been damage to the road surface.

"For safety reasons the lane closure will remain in place during the peak period."

Traffic is already queuing on the Nicholas Street dual carriageway and is expected to get worse as rush hour approaches.

Cheshire West and Chester Council has advised motorists to seek alternative routes if possible throughout the course of the roadworks.

The council adds all timings are approximate and will depend on the nature of the leak and the materials underneath. The contractors will return the road to traffic at peak periods but only if safe to do so.

The road was excavated at 9.30am on Tuesday for Severn Trent Water contractors to carry out repairs.

It ios hoped, the road will be covered and open to traffic at peak times on Wednesday (6am-9.30am and 3.30pm-7pm), but this may not be possible.

The last set of works is scheduled to be completed by 6am on Thursday.
