Charges against a Beach Park man, who allegedly attacked his 70-year-old father with garden shears Thursday, were upgraded to first-degree murder after the severely wounded man died Friday.

George W. Bryce, 21, was charged with first-degree murder Friday afternoon, according to the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office. He had previously been arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder.

Bryce’s father died Friday afternoon at Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan, the day after he allegedly was attacked by his son with garden shears during an argument in the home where both lived, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a sheriff’s office release, deputies were dispatched to a Peacock Road home at about 3:05 p.m. Thursday after receiving a call of a domestic battery in progress.

On arrival, the statement added, deputies found a 70-year-old man “with multiple sharp-force injuries laying on the floor,” and began administering aid before the man was transported to Vista East with what authorities described as critical injuries.

Bryce was taken into custody and transported to the Sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Division. According to the state’s attorney’s office, he was ordered held Friday on $2 million bail, and he now has another bond hearing scheduled Saturday on the new murder charges.

Bryce is also scheduled to appear in court for a status of attorney hearing on Tuesday, but officials said that date may be changed at Saturday’s bond hearing.

According to an updated release on the case from the state’s attorney’s office late Friday, the investigation continues and additional charges are possible against Bryce.
