Special delivery for NHS staff in Chichester

It was a different type of ward round for chief nurse Maggie Davies on International Nurses and Midwives Day last week, as she delivered ‘thank you’ cream teas to thousands of staff at St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester, Worthing Hospital and Southlands in Shoreham.

The Western Sussex Hospitals chief nurse said: “Our nursing staff are extraordinary, showing exactly the compassion, dedication and care the profession is so admired for. We also recognised that nursing doesn’t happen in isolation – nursing is part of a whole team effort to provide outstanding care for all our patients – and that’s why, thanks to generous financial donations from the public, our Love Your Hospital charity has been able to fund cream teas for all our staff.” Maggie visited every ward to personally express her gratitude to staff across the whole of Western Sussex Hospitals. With a team of volunteers, Maggie covered 25 miles from Chichester to Shoreham during the day, walked more than 14,500 steps and visited dozens of clinical areas to deliver 7,000 cream teas. “Seeing their smiling faces made it a truly wonderful day,” said Maggie. “It was a privilege to be part of the celebrations. This year has been absolutely unprecedented with the coronavirus pandemic, so it was extra important to be able to thank all the staff for their incredible work and dedication during these tough times. I also want to say a huge thank you to all the volunteers and catering staff that helped prepare and deliver the cream teas to mark this very special occasion.” This year’s day of celebration, last Tuesday, would have been Florence Nightingale’s 200th birthday. To mark the occasion the World Health Organisation dedicated 2020 as the official year of the nurse and midwife. “Florence Nightingale was a trailblazer when it came to healthcare reform and, particularly, infection control,” said Maggie. “Today, 200 years after she was born, we celebrate the same culture of innovation, improvement and care as exemplified by our own nurses.”
