CHILLICOTHE - A Bainbridge man attempting to remove a dead deer from Ohio 772 had to be airlifted to a Columbus hospital after being struck by a vehicle Thursday evening.

According to the Ohio Highway patrol, Michael Brown, 62, was driving south on Ohio 772 about 6:03 p.m. when he stopped to remove the deer from the road. A 2002 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Bobby C. Waterbury, 79, of Chillicothe, was also headed southbound when Waterbury attempted to slow down to avoid colliding with other stopped traffic and with Brown's vehicle, but he lost control and partially traveled off the right side of the road.

Waterbury struck the guardrail, then hit Brown as he was removing the deer and continued into Brown's vehicle.

Brown was transported by Huntington Township EMS to the nearby Hirsch's Fruit Farm, from which he was flown by MedFlight to The Ohio State University Hospital. Waterbury was treated for injuries on the scene and refused transport.

The Ross County Sheriff's Office, Huntington Township Fire Department, Huntington Township EMS and MedFlight all responded to the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
