Fresh details of casualties injured in a crash on the A1 have been made public.

Five people, including three children, were injured in a crash on the A1 in Northumberland involving a tractor and four cars.

Emergency services rushed to the A1 southbound near Shilbottle where a tractor pulling a hay baler collided with a car at around 2.45pm on Sunday.

The road was closed in both directions as a huge response including 10 ambulances, two air ambulances, police and fire crews descended on the scene.

Crews from Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service freed a number of casualties who were trapped inside a car.

Five occupants of one of the car - aged 64, 57, eight, nine and two - were all taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for further treatment.

The North East Ambulance Service and the Great North Air Ambulance said that three of the casualties, including two children, were airlifted to hospital in a "critical" condition.

A spokesperson for the Great North Air Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 2.45pm to reports of a high-speed road traffic collision near Shilbottle.

“Due to the fact that there were multiple patients, we sent two aircraft, one from Teesside International Airport, one from Langwathby, near Penrith, and airlifted three patients.

“We had doctors on board, and after administering treatment at the scene the three patients were taken to hospital."

However, police have now described the injuries of the patients as "serious but non-life-threatening".

The A1 was closed in parts for more than six hours as officers carried out investigation and recovery work, causing delays for bank holiday drivers.

Police are now investigating and are appealing for witnesses or anyone who may have dash-cam footage of the collision.

Sergeant Matt Sykes, of Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols Department, said: “This is a serious collision which has left a number of people, including three children, with serious injuries.

“We have already conducted a number of enquiries but now we are appealing for any witnesses who have not yet spoken to police to get in touch.

“If you saw what happened, or if you have any dash-cam that may have captured what happened, then please contact police.”
