This was the burnt-out wreckage of an ambulance which burst into flames outside a Newcastle hospital.

Flames erupted from the ambulance outside the Assessment Suite at the Royal Victoria Infirmary on Thursday morning.

Pictures show the charred interior of the ambulance and one of the windows damaged by the searing heat.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service confirmed two crews were dispatched to the scene at about 10am.

Nobody was injured in the incident, and the fire was quickly extinguished.

A spokesperson for Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: “A patient transport vehicle caught fire outside the Assessment Suite at the Royal Victoria Infirmary earlier this morning.

“Thankfully, nobody was injured and we would like to thank our staff for their prompt actions and the fire and rescue service for dealing with the incident so quickly and efficiently.”
