New offices being built in the shadow of the Tyne Bridge could boast a roof terrace.

The Adderstone Group was given the go-ahead to build the office space underneath what is currently a walkway close the Hilton Hotel and the adjoining flats at Bottle Bank, in Gateshead , last year.

When the plans were submitted, the Newcastle-based developer said the Bottle Bank scheme could become one of the "most prominent" offices in the region.

At the time Adderstone Group development surveyor, Danielle Wilson, said: "This has the potential to be one of the most prominent office locations in the North East.

"Bottle Bank would be one of our first speculative office developments for a few years but we are confident there is demand for quality, Grade A space from occupiers."

Construction on the office block got under way in December.

Now, the developer wants to add a roof terrace it, to provide outdoor space for the employees using the office.

A form submitted to the authority said: "The addition of a roof terrace for occasional use to be provided with frame-less glass balustrading to the north and a planted screen to the west.

"This will provide additional outdoor space for the office employees. The terrace will be accessed from the internal spiral staircase with a flat glazed roof-light over giving access to the roof, and daylight to the stair enclosure."

They added that the terrace would be built to the north west of the site away from the residents of Curzon Place and with a screen to minimise visual intrusion.

Gateshead Council will decide whether to give permission for the roof terrace addition by April 11.
