County Durham MP Laura Pidcock has announced that her father has died.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn joined in the tributes to Bernard Pidcock who was a serving councillor at Northumberland County Council.

Coun Pidcock, who represented the Holywell ward , passed away on Saturday morning.

His daughter announced his death on Twitter saying he was her "best friend".

North West Durham MP Laura posted a photo of herself with her parents and said: "My beautiful dad died this morning. He was much more than a dad, he was my best friend & comrade.

"He was a servant to others & the pursuit of socialism. This picture shows one of his happiest moments. I am heartbroken."

Jeremy Corbyn replied saying: "Beautiful picture of a wonderful family. So sad at his passing and was a privilege to have known him and been supported by him.

"All strength to You, your Mum and Daniel."

Redcar MP Anna Turley said: "Very sorry to hear this Laura. That beautiful picture shows how proud he was of you.

"Sending you and all your family sympathies and best wishes at this sad time."

The Durham Miners' Association added: "Our condolences to you and your family Laura.

"We know you'll continue to do your dad proud."

Laura was born in North Shields and raised by Bernard and social worker mum Mary in New Hartley and Seaton Delaval, Northumberland.
