A flight landing at Newcastle Airport was met by emergency services following reports of suspicious activity on board.

The alarm is believed to have been raised on Loganair flight LM547 from Brussels to Newcastle on Sunday, May 5, when two men were said to have been acting suspiciously.

A source told ChronicleLive that the cabin crew notified the pilot who made an announcement to passengers informing them that an emergency landing would be taking place at Newcastle, sparking distress on board.

One passenger, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "It was scary and a nerve-wracking experience. The pilot said we were declaring an emergency landing.

"I was sat a few rows in front of the passengers and couldn’t see anything but other passengers said they were acting suspicious."

Flight LM547 was met on the Newcastle Airport runway at around 8.35pm by three fire engines and taxied the aircraft to its stand where around 10 police officers were waiting.

"As soon as the engines has stopped and the door opened the cabin crew got off to inform the police of what happened," said the passenger.

"Then approximately 10 minutes later the cabin crew came over the tannoy and informed us all to leave the aircraft immediately via the steps.

"There were police awaiting for us at the bottom of the aircraft and once everyone was off the police pulled the two suspicious passengers to one side and searched them.

"The nature of this has put me off flying again."

Northumbria Police confirmed two men were arrested on suspicion of immigration offences and the case has been referred to Border Force.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “We can confirm we received a report of suspicious activity aboard a flight that was due to land at Newcastle Airport on Sunday evening.

"It had been reported that two men had been behaving suspiciously on the flight.

"Officers boarded the flight when it landed and the men were arrested on suspicion of immigration offences.
