Four people were taken to hospital following a crash in Northumberland.

Emergency services were called to the A189 near Woodhorn Roundabout on Wednesday afternoon after two vehicles collided shortly after 2pm.

One vehicle involved is believed to have overturned on the carriageway.

Police were forced to close the road for a short time while the vehicles were recovered.

The patients were taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington.

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 2.32pm to reports of a road traffic collision, believed to have been involving two vehicles, at Woodhorn Roundabout.

"We sent four ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, an officer and a Hazardous Area Response Team crew.

"We have taken four patients to Cramlington hospital with a mixture of chest, back and abdominal injuries.

"We left the scene at 4.21pm."
