More than 100 North East post offices will become banks under a Labour Government.

It means the post offices will be protected from any potential threat of closure - and local people will be guaranteed a bank in their neighbourhood offering traditional face-to-face service.

Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell said he wanted to ensure a proper bank was available to everyone, even though high street banks have been closing branches.

And he named the post offices that will become part of the planned 'Post Bank' network, a publicly-owned bank that would be set up by the Government.

Mr McDonnell said: “We all love our local post offices, and this plan will protect them by giving them a vital extra role: providing our communities with face-to-face banking.

“This is a plan for defending our high streets: it keeps post offices safe for years to come and brings foot fall back into our town centres.

"Plus it provides finance to local small businesses – especially cooperatives, companies that don’t hurt the environment, and those that do research and development.

“We’re going to take finance out of the hands of the big banks and the speculators – and into the hands of our regions and communities. That’s how we’ll rebuild Britain for the many, not the few.”

The Post Bank will be given initial set-up funding of £2.5bn by the Government. It would mean ending the existing partnership with Bank of Ireland UK, under which many post offices already offer financial services.

As well as offering banking services to individuals, the new Post Bank will provide relationship banking with small businesses, acting as an “on-lender” for the regional development banks, to kickstart SME investment.

Research by Which? has revealed that the UK has lost nearly two-thirds of its bank and building society branches over the past 30 years, from 20,583 in 1988 to just 7,586 today, leaving a fifth of the population two miles away from their nearest branch.

Here are the Post Offices that would be included in the Post Bank network under Labour, according to John McDonnell:
