Photographer documents Newcastle on lockdown and the results are striking

Events photographer Thomas Jackson is capturing Newcastle during the coronavirus lockdown with his project 'A City on Pause'

It may seem hard to believe, but the strict new coronavirus lockdown laws have changed a lot in a short space of time.

Newcastle is well known for being a party city, with some of the bests pubs and bars.

But the once bustling city centre streets are now silent, giving way to some rather eerie sights.

One photographer, from Gateshead, is now using his daily walk to document the city during lockdown.

Thomas Jackson plans to capture the city throughout the lockdown and share pictures of the city like it has never been seen before.

The 38-year-old, originally from Durham, said: "We're all so used to seeing Newcastle rammed, but I wanted to document how the city changes in the coming weeks, or even months.

"I think this historic time will see the city change forever. On a positive note, I think we will see a greater sense of community develop, but sadly on a negative note, I think we will also see a lot of businesses really struggle and perhaps not reopen at the end of this."

Thomas, who owns Tyne Sight Photography, hopes that his project, 'A City on Pause', will enable people to look back on this time and relive moments through his work.

He also plans to continue the project in the weeks after the lockdown is lifted to show how the city comes back to life.

Thomas added: "I feel the weeks after the lockdown could potentially be quite intense as people venture back into Newcastle, so I think it might be worth revisiting the same spots in that time to provide a juxtaposition to show just how things have changed."

His work can be viewed on his website.
